The Invitation

Flow is a word that is more than a word. I like the word because it carries the same kind of ambiguity as truth or love. When I hear it, a quiet question arises: what is flowing, where does it want to flow, and why? I don’t really know, and that not knowing is the premise of the blog. What I do know is that there is something that wants to flow.

I see something: the sacred duality. Like the simple act of breathing: inhale and exhale. Between those two movements, something flows through the body that cannot be put into words, something alive and vibrant. I have been a keen observer of life, and seeing this duality comes easily to me: happiness and sadness, separation and togetherness, man and woman, goal and journey, observer and observed, singer and listener, death and birth, dancer and watcher, suffering and joy, Yin and Yang, and infinitely more such pairs. They look opposite and contradictory as concepts, yet it is precisely this sense of oppositeness that gives each other meaning.

Life can be described through these pairs, yet something always wants to move between them. Something wants to flow, to dance, between a man and a woman, between extreme suffering and bliss, between good and bad. This is the fundamental longing for all of us, I think, to experience that movement, that unobstructed flow of life within us and with each other. Our desires are simple; we want to feel alive, playful, and not bored or stuck.

There is suffering in a practical sense of poverty, of not having enough, but I want to talk about the existential suffering that all of us collectively carry. We have abstract goals and ideas in life: like career, success, fame, relationships as a future state. But our existential problem is simple: we don’t feel alive, we feel stuck, and we feel bored. We don’t feel the flow of life within us. So what can we do? We can make an honest effort towards making our body a vessel that allows this flow of life. We can make our mind something that supports, enjoys, allows and trusts this flow.

This blog is an invitation to that preparation of body and mind in service for the flow of life. It is not an invitation to a philosophy, morality, an idea, or an intellectual understanding of what the universe or life should be. It is an invitation to a living, breathing experience of life. It is an invitation to flow.
