These are our five senses, but perhaps it is more accurate to describe them as the very mechanisms of the body through which we navigate the material world. In every moment, every single action, we are continuously utilising these senses to hold a sort of conversation or energy exchange with everything outside of our body. They are the bridge to the way we experience reality.

Take touch as an example. If you look closely, there is a fundamental duality to it: you can either reach out and touch something or someone, or you can be touched by it. When you think about it deeply, the active choice to touch something means you are projecting your life energy outward, making an imprint on your surroundings. You are the active participant. Conversely, when you are being touched, you shift into a state of reception. You are absorbing energy and information from the outside world.

Take sound now. You can either listen to the outside world. Listen to what others are saying, listen to music, listen to birds, listen to nature. In this listening, you are receiving energy from the outside world. Then the duality of it is speaking. You can speak what you want to say, express yourself, tell what you think is right or wrong, in words. This is a way of you putting out your energy into the world from your body.

Take vision, for instance. You can either see things or look at them. You can watch TV, look at movies, observe people, take in the natural world, or read books to consume knowledge through your eyes. In all of these moments, the outside world is flowing directly into you; you are quietly absorbing energy. The duality of this is being seen. This requires a completely different kind of exertion. You can be on stage, you can be dancing, you can be singing, putting your pictures and creations out into the world, or writing a book that others will eventually look at. You see, all of these acts are a way you let the outside world witness you. To be seen requires you to build something or take up space, and in doing so, you are actively projecting your life energy outwardly for others to see.

Take smell and breath. Every time you inhale, you are smelling the outside world, a person, the rain, cooked food, a flower, or simply the air around you. In this act of smelling, the chemistry of the outside world is literally entering your body; you are quietly taking the energy in. We often underestimate just how profoundly our life experiences are shaped by smell. For instance, research suggests that 70% to 80% of what we perceive as taste is actually derived from scent. The opposite of this is what we project outward. Not only do we breathe out, but also our body naturally releases a distinct scent wherever we go. You are constantly projecting your scent for others to smell. This dual nature – smelling the world while the world smells you runs remarkably deep. Your natural odour plays a quiet and decisive role in who feels safe, comfortable, and attractive to you.

Take a very unique bodily mechanism of food – and taste. Taste is primarily a sense of consumption. You eat, you savour, you drink. You pull the physical material of the outside world directly into your body, you digest it, and then extract nutrition and energy that helps you build and sustain your body. In this act, the outside world is being entirely consumed to serve you. But the duality of this lies in what your body does with that material. If you really look closely, the body is in a continuous, tireless process of creation and repair. It is actively using that energy, that food gathered from the outside world, to literally build itself. So, the duality of taste is actually found in the physical creativity of the human body. You consume the material, and your body uses it to build itself. The purely consumptive act of tasting and eating is balanced by the profound, quiet act of the body actively nourishing, growing, and recreating itself moment by moment.

Duality

There is a fundamental duality to how we live and interact with reality. One part is consumption, and the direct opposite of it is expression. Consuming is the act of taking in from the outside world, both physically and energetically. Expressing, on the other hand, is pulling something from within yourself and projecting it out into the outside world, physically and energetically.

Let’s look at an extensive list of what consumption and expression actually look like in our daily lives.

Consumption

Letting others touch you, listening to others speak, putting on podcasts, music, audiobooks, or lectures. Watching movies, TV shows, and live sports. Scrolling through Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube. Reading books, articles, and novels. Browsing Twitter, Reddit, and the daily news. Smelling nature, flowers, or a burning candle. Eating food, drinking alcohol, or consuming other beverages.

But consumption and consuming habits go even further. Buying and accumulating material goods or clothes, mindlessly swiping on dating apps, smoking or taking in chemicals/substances, taking in the warmth of the sun on your skin, or even just sitting passively and letting the noise of the city wash over you.

And then there is travelling, which has evolved into perhaps the highest form of consumption today. Modern tourism is the ultimate consumption habit for taking the outside world inside you. You buy flights and hotels to explore new landscapes, exotic cuisines, foreign cultures, and new experiences. You are not building the city or sustaining the local culture; you are simply passing through the city as a mere spectator, absorbing the sights, sounds, and energy of the place. It is a very subtle and peak consumption habit because it is truly about devouring your senses with new places, scenes and experiences.

Expression

Expression is the active projection of your internal life energy in any shape or form. It is the act of taking what is inside of you – an idea, a desire, a thought process, a vision, or an imaginary reality – and turning it into a physical, material reality. Let’s look at several examples to understand what this actually looks like in daily life.

Speaking is a very natural form of expression, such as singing out loud, giving a public speech, or giving a presentation. In the form of creative work – writing an essay or a blog article, journaling, drafting a book, creating music, painting, designing, cooking a meal or building a piece of furniture.

If you look at it on a strictly physical level, it is about building your body. Going to the gym, exercising, and intentionally eating healthy to give your body the material to grow becomes a profound act of self-expression. When you play a sport, dance, or physically push yourself, it becomes a way to express your inner energy outwardly.

If you take it to a very abstract level, simply creating space for things to happen is a powerful form of expression and creativity. For example, creating a business. You build a structure where other people can work, and you produce what you want to produce – that is a massive form of self-expression. Whether you build a physical meetup, an organisation, or a digital space where people can come together and work/socialise, you are taking an internal vision and projecting it outward for the world to interact with.

The funny thing is – if you open a bar as a business, manage it, and hire people, you are being highly expressive and creative. But the people who walk in, drink alcohol, and socialise? They are simply consuming your creation.

If you are really serious about understanding your own mind and body, and finding harmony in your life, try this simple exercise. Take a piece of paper or open an Excel sheet. Create two columns: one for consumption behaviour, and one for expressive action. Take a week or two to just observe yourself. As the days pass, slowly write down your consumption habits and expressive actions. After two weeks, you will have a very clear picture of how your life energy is behaving. You might find that you are living in a consumption imbalance or perhaps an expressive imbalance. An alarming sign in life is when you are completely skewed to one side – when you are only consuming all the time, or only expressing all the time. That is when it becomes a dangerous and unhealthy way of living. And next, we are going to understand exactly why it is so unhealthy.

Fun note: This blog post is actually for people who are heavily skewed toward compulsive consumption. The main reason I chose to focus on the addiction to consumption is simple: the people suffering from it are the ones most likely to actually read this. People who are stuck in compulsive expression barely listen to others, let alone read what others write, so there is no point in writing an article for them – life will teach them in its own way. But those who are caught in addictive consumption? They are often the spiritual seekers, the ones trying to solve their life’s problems by reading, absorbing, and trying to understand. That is why this blog post is written specifically for them.

Health and Addiction

Now, let’s try to understand why any compulsive extreme of behaviour – whether in consumption or expression – is unhealthy for the whole body. By now, you must have realised this fundamental duality in life: consumption- and expression-based actions are continuous. You are either consuming or expressing yourself all the time. This is the fundamental state of your energy, constantly flowing in one of these two directions.

To understand this better, let’s do an experiment using the most fundamental duality in our physical body: breathing.

Breathing is a beautiful phenomenon. If you just leave the body alone, it will breathe perfectly and in balance on its own. Yet, at the same time, you can consciously control your breath with your mind. That is why breathing is the absolute best tool we have for understanding the relationship between the mind and the body.

Try this: Start inhaling. Keep on inhaling. Keep inhaling continuously without exhaling.

After a short while, you will feel your body becoming tense and anxious. You physically cannot inhale anymore. Now, do the exact same thing with exhaling. Keep pushing the air out. You will quickly feel like you are going to die if you don’t take a breath. From this simple experiment, a profound truth arrives: if you only inhale, or only exhale, you will physically die.

The exact same rule applies to your energy, your emotions, and your body. If your life is only filled with consumption activities or only expressive activities, it is exactly like you are only inhaling or exhaling. In a sense, your mind is forcing your body to stay in either consumption or in expression. This creates an imbalance or dysregulation in your body.

Most people have already experienced this imbalance and dysregulation firsthand. Let’s take a simple everyday example: binge-watching a Netflix series. You consume the first episode, then the second, then the third, and so on. If you pay just a little bit of attention to your body, you will see a clear, undeniable pattern parallel to breathing. As you progress episode by episode, assuming it is a good TV show, your pleasure rises to a peak. This is similar to when you take a deep breath in: it feels deeply satisfying. But if you keep going, if you keep consuming or inhaling, your body will eventually start to feel worse, even painful. When you binge-watch, you can notice that no matter how incredible the TV show is, your body eventually feels saturated, heavy, and anxious after a certain point. Then something deeply unhealthy happens: you, or specifically, your mind keeps pushing your body to consume more episodes even when the body clearly does not want to. By the end of such an addictive session, you don’t feel satisfied; you feel anxious, empty, and unfulfilled. It is because your mind forces your body past its natural limit. It creates an inner tension, a conflict, and an ongoing battle with your own physical body, just like trying to force your lungs to keep inhaling when they are already completely full.

To understand why addiction happens, we first have to look at the central driver behind it all: the mind.

If I ask you: “Is consumption good or bad? What is the right thing to do, consumption or expression?”

What happens? Your mind immediately goes to work. But the only answers your brain can ever produce are binary: this or that, yes or no, good or bad. The mind is structurally incapable of experiencing wholeness; it can only categorise. Even if you try to think your way out of it and say, “The answer is balance,” the mind has already created a static definition of what “balance” looks like. It turns balance into a rule, a target, or a goal to achieve, which itself becomes just another rigid, extreme position.

Because of this binary nature, the mind can get attached to one pole of energy. Sometimes it clings desperately to consumption. Other times, it clings to expression. This gives us a very simple definition of addiction: addiction is when your mind insists on sticking to only one side of the duality.

This mental attachment manifests directly as addictive behaviour in your daily life. And living this way completely dysregulates your whole system. Sticking only to consumption or only to expression is physically identical to inhaling only or exhaling only. You will inevitably feel pain and discomfort in your body. This is why addiction is not merely a mental health issue; it is a physical assault on your entire body.

Health is not a rule; health is a living harmony. Your physical body already knows how to exist in this harmony. Left to itself, it knows exactly when to inhale and when to exhale. Yet a mind obsessed with an extreme, whether it is the dopamine rush of endless consumption or the proud trip of nonstop expression, forces the body out of its natural, quiet rhythm. When this happens, the mind stops being a partner to the body and starts acting like a dictator. It controls the body. It forces the body.

If you look back at any of your addictive sessions of consumption, whether food, Instagram scrolling, binge-watching, or alcohol, you will find this pattern everywhere. In those moments, your mind forces your body to serve a mental obsession while the body feels anxious, unsafe, and depressed. This is the hidden mechanism of addiction: a commanding mind that slowly creates a sick body.

A Pause

One might look at their life and say: “I am addicted to consumption. I binge-watch, I scroll, and I eat just to numb myself. But I don’t know how to stop. I literally cannot feel when my body is saturated, or when it is screaming ‘no’.”

I understand this experience of life too😢. You can become so deeply trapped in your own head, so completely dominated by your mind, that you lose all connection to your physical body. You might have no idea that you are actually hurting your body by compulsively and addictively consuming. This is an extremely painful way to exist. When the mind is totally obsessed with consumption, the whole of life begins to feel meaningless, empty, and unfulfilled. It brings on a heavy, continuous depression, and eventually, it manifests as physical pain in the body, physical illnesses and discomforts where you don’t even know what is going wrong. All you know, deep down, is that something is terribly wrong.

I truly acknowledge this reality of life too. This is the heavy, dark place where so many might be currently living. And there is no magical switch. I cannot tell you, and you cannot tell yourself, that tomorrow you will suddenly be a different person and this addiction will just vanish. It is simply not possible. And most importantly, it is not compassionate to expect that of yourself, either.

Darkness of Addiction to Consumption

Imagine your body and life energy as a pendulum. The two extreme ends of this pendulum are two natural, healthy experiences of life: consumption and expression. Both are necessary, and both carry their own beauty when energy is allowed to flow. Think of a mind that is free, a mind that is not locked or addicted. It will naturally let the body and energy swing from consumption to expression, and then back to consumption on its own, effortlessly maintaining life’s rhythm. Almost like how you breathe: you inhale, and then when you feel full, you exhale, and then when you feel fully empty, you inhale again effortlessly. Similarly, a mind that is not addicted will behave like empty space that lets life flow. The body and energy will consume; once it feels full, it will express itself; and then once it feels empty, it will consume again. The mind will become a healthy partner of the body, helping it experience its natural rhythm.

An addicted mind is like a lock. It clamps the pendulum of body and energy down and binds you to one side: consumption. A mind addicted to consumption almost makes the body forget that the other side even exists. So you no longer know any other way to experience life except through endlessly consuming.

The image perfectly depicts an addicted mind as the lock that binds your body to one side of the pendulum. The addiction makes you feel like you only have one way to experience life, that is through consumption. Addiction to consumption feels like you are simply not allowed to express yourself.

Hence, the darkness, pain, and suffering that follow do not come from consumption itself. They come from the addiction to consumption and the complete inability to express yourself. It comes from the lock that binds you to consumption without your choice.

There are many subtle signs and symptoms of this addiction in life. The key to all of them is: consumption feels effortless, and expression feels painful. Here is a brief exploration of them.

Addiction to consumption

This is the most direct and obvious symptom you can become aware of in your own life. It manifests as an incessant, almost automated urge to consume. You watch movies, TV shows, scroll through Instagram or YouTube, or reach for food, drink alcohol or take substances not to enjoy them but simply out of a mechanical, repetitive habit. In this state, consumption is no longer a choice, but a simple repetitive pattern in your life that you have no control over.

Procrastination

It will at first seem fascinating that I put procrastination as a symptom of addiction to consumption here. But once you really understand it, you will know why it is so.

I looked it up on the internet, and the most common definition of procrastination is: Procrastination is the act of voluntarily delaying a task or goal despite expecting negative consequences. It is not laziness; rather, it is a failure of emotional regulation where the brain seeks immediate relief from the discomfort or stress of an impending task. (https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/basics/procrastination)

To put it in the language of this blog post, I will redefine procrastination. Procrastination is the habit of a person who is addicted to consumption, but is forced to express themselves out of sheer necessity. Because their energy is locked on the side of consumption, that act of expression does not flow naturally. It comes out in a frantic, painful, and highly compulsive manner.

Let’s take a simple act of procrastination. You get a task on Monday at work, and you have to finish it by Friday. If you work every day bit by bit, you will finish the work effortlessly by Friday. But what does someone who procrastinates do? They don’t work on Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday. Instead, they engage in consumption habits. It might be simply watching movies, going through newsletters, reading a book, or even trying to learn something new and useful, all to avoid doing the task bit by bit. During these three days, the anxiety and stress of having to finish before the deadline keep building up as the days pass, one by one. But even after day one, you can’t make yourself work. Even after day two, you can’t make yourself work. By day three, your body might literally be screaming in fear and pain, yet your mind is still driving you to consume just a bit more. Finally, the stress and anxiety become so overwhelming that you are forced to act. On the last day, you don’t really work, you compulsively work to finish the task. You work frantically, anxiously, overextending your body just to make it across the finish line. This is how the typical cycle of procrastination unfolds.

The core of procrastination is this exact imbalance: you engage in consumption habits for 80% to 90% of the time, and then frantically, compulsively try to finish your work in the remaining 10% to 20%. This is why procrastination is not a time-management issue; it is a direct consequence of an addiction to consumption. A mind and body locked in this addiction can consume effortlessly, but it cannot express effortlessly. For a healthy mind, expression happens bit by bit, you start on Monday, do a little on Tuesday, and the task finishes naturally. But for a mind addicted to consumption, that slow, steady act of expression feels deeply painful.

What actually happens in real life?

You might sit down to work on Monday, but the moment you try to express yourself, you hit immediate friction and pain. To escape that discomfort, your mind instantly retreats to what feels easy and soothing: consumption. On Tuesday, you try again, feel the same pain, and flee back to consumption. On Wednesday, the exact same story repeats. Because gentle, natural expression feels too painful for an addicted mind, it can no longer bring itself to work under normal conditions. It now requires a survival-level event; a threat or danger; to force it into action. In the workplace, that survival threat is the raw fear of losing your job, ruining your reputation, or facing public shame. Only when the terror of consequences becomes extreme does the mind finally react. But because that expression is driven by panic rather than flow, it comes out as a frantic, exhausting, and compulsive burst of energy. Procrastination is this: a mind that refuses to express and indulge in compulsion until there is an external threat like a deadline.

The painful thing about procrastination is you hurt your body deeply. You hurt it when you consume addictively, which creates more and more anxiety in your body. Every time you consume when you should be expressing yourself, your body feels less safe and more anxious. And then you hurt your body by expressing compulsively; almost forcing your body into action frantically in panic.

So know that such living is physically abusive to the body. ☹️

Incapacity for Expression

In almost every addiction to consumption lies a quiet unconscious belief: “I can’t express what I truly want to express.”

So many people, especially young people, bury themselves in movies, TV shows, and other unhealthy forms of consumption out of a deep sense of powerlessness. They feel an overwhelming incapacity for self-expression. When the outside world does not feel like a safe space for you to express your ideas, emotions, imagination, and thought process, you retreat into what is most comfortable: simply consuming. Every attempt to express yourself begins to feel terrifying and painful. So consumption becomes your default way of living life.

Physical Symptoms

In extreme cases, the addiction to consumption manifests in the physical body. By default, anyone who is addicted to consumption has their body automatically skewed towards consuming rather than expressing; it affects the whole mechanism of the body. And this addiction – that is coming out of the mind’s clinging to consumption – wreaks havoc on the body.

Many experience eating addictively – not because they are hungry but because the body does not know any other way to regulate itself.

For example, sometimes you might find yourself in a deeply stressful situation – at work, in a relationship, or with your family. The natural, healthy response to stress is always an act of expression: asking for help, setting a clear boundary, or simply telling others, “I cannot be in this situation right now because it is not healthy for me.” That is an expression. But when you are locked in an addiction to consumption, speaking up feels far too risky or exhausting. So instead of expressing what is inside, your mind and body automatically shift to consuming. That is why so many people use food, especially junk food, sugar, or sweets, to regulate their emotions. This creates a deeply problematic loop. A stressful situation by itself is already damaging to your health through anxiety and tension. Instead of releasing that tension through expression, you consume junk food or sugar. Now you add another physically unhealthy substance to your body – that creates more inflammation and poor digestion on top of your stress-triggered nervous system. You are basically hitting your body twice from different sides. Consider what happens when you live in this cycle. It might just happen three or four times a week. But compound this effect over months, years and decades. Day after day, your body is forced to carry unexpressed emotional stress and digest the junk food used to numb it. These are the seeds of chronic long-term diseases that would look like they appear from nowhere late in your life.

Another purely personal observation of mine, which may not apply to everyone, is how this dynamic sometimes reflects in physical body structure. I have occasionally noticed a pattern where some people deeply trapped in mental consumption remain very thin or struggle to put on healthy weight. This is certainly not a universal rule or a medical claim, but simply a pattern I have observed. When the mind is completely oriented toward passive consumption, that tendency can subtly affect how we digest, assimilate, and relate to food. Physical growth and building muscle are themselves acts of bodily expression and creation. If the mind keeps the system blocked in a passive state, the body can struggle to transform the food it consumes into true physical vitality, strength, or mass. It is as if the food is taken in, but because the body is not allowed to express itself, the body can’t assimilate the food properly to build a vibrant and resilient body. It is an interesting parallel to consider: how an inner block toward expression might subtly affect us even at a cellular level and manifest in our physical form.

Sometimes, you can become so deeply blocked from expressing yourself that you struggle to simply put your thoughts and emotions into basic words. At an extreme physical level, this mental lock manifests directly in your body as a blockage in your throat. When you try to speak up or express what you are feeling, you might experience a literal, tight sensation in the throat area, as if something is physically stopping the words from coming out. In other cases, when you finally force yourself to speak, your voice trembles, shakes, or breaks down completely. Your throat and nervous system are so unused to the natural flow of expression that the simple act of projecting your inner voice feels overwhelming to the physical body.

In conclusion, addiction to consumption leads to an incapacity to express yourself through action and work properly. It affects your body and mind deeply, resulting in a broken relationship between them. In extreme cases, it might lead to long-term chronic illness and recurring health issues.

The System Built for Addiction: Society and Economy

The addiction to consumption is treated as an individual problem. One thing you will notice if you jump into psychology, self-help, or almost any system trying to help people is that they always assume it is an individual failure. That is why most of the content out there on addiction to consumption is filled with condemnation of individuals and their failure to break free. However, rarely does anybody speak against the structure, the society, and the economy we are currently living in. There is a very specific reason why coming out of this addiction is such a difficult task, and why it feels so easy to fall right back into consumption: it is because of how our surroundings, our society, and our economy are designed. Most people do not speak about this, because most content out there is ultimately serving society and the economy, not the individual. Let me show you how.

Let’s take an example of the day-to-day life of a normal working person. It is the weekend.

He wakes up in the morning and scrolls through Instagram for 15-20 minutes before getting out of bed. (Consumption of content)

After a while, he eats a ready-made breakfast – mostly bread or cereal. (Consumption of food)

It is the weekend, so it is time to relax. So he turns on his laptop and watches some Netflix TV shows for a few hours. (Consumption of entertainment)

He has some lunch. (Consuming food)

Later, after lunch, he planned to visit a museum with a friend. (Consuming history and knowledge)

In the evening, a few friends of his called him to go watch a football match at a bar. (Consuming alcohol, drinks and sports content)

After that, the friends group goes out for dinner. (Consuming food)

Later, he was tired, so he headed home. Most probably, he puts on headphones to listen to music. ( Consuming music)

He reaches home; now, after a long, tiring day of consuming everything, it is time to relax. Maybe a bit more Netflix, and sleeping.

I might have exaggerated a little bit, but many people live this life. This is not a total stretch, but a normal free day for most working people. Just look around when you go out; people are on their phones watching TikTok or Instagram or listening to music. After such consumption-filled days, if most people feel unfulfilled, depressed, and anxious, it is not a surprise.

No Space for Creativity

Look around you and observe what kind of events or activities bring people together in today’s world. Last month (July, 2026), during the Football World Cup 2026, I saw people gathering in bars and restaurants by the hundreds, all staring at screens to watch the games together. Thousands of people bought tickets, paid huge sums of money, and packed into massive stadiums. What are these 1000s of people doing together? They are consuming.

Almost all social gatherings are about consumption. People go to movies, watch sports, go to bars and clubs, attend music festivals, and go out for dinners. It is rare and far less common to find spaces that are simply about creative expression. When was the last time you heard of a space for painting, dancing, singing, writing, exercising, playing sports, doing yoga, or meditating that existed at the scale of the Football World Cup 2026?

Yes, you will hear about workshops on writing, singing, and dancing. It is an interesting phenomenon. These workshops disguise themselves as creative spaces, but if you look deeply, they are actually spaces for consuming knowledge. Why do most people gather in those workshops? To learn. And learning is inherently a consumption activity, where you take knowledge into your system. So these workshops are ultimately not spaces for true creativity, but for consumption.

Living here in Belgium over the last month (July 2026), events like the World Cup and Tomorrowland immediately come to my mind as world-famous consumption events. Millions of people gather just to consume the music, the drinks, and the sport. But I cannot recall a single world-famous creative event from the last year, a space where massive crowds of people gather primarily to create and express rather than consume.

Collectively, society is made in such a way that you don’t create/express but consume. There is less space for creative, expressive shared space than spaces that allow mindless consumption. In consumption spaces, you are not an active participant, but a passive consumer of products. You just need to spend money, buy tickets, drinks, buy subscriptions and consume.

That brings me to the real problem: money or the economy is involved in consumption. Think: if a million people start doing creative and expressive activities on Friday evening instead of watching TV at home. What will happen to streaming platform companies? They might go bankrupt. Think of millions spending their evening in expressive activities rather than going to clubs, bars, music festivals, – the whole economy will be in danger.

The Consumer Economy

Let’s understand, in simple terms, how the economy works. We don’t need a degree in economics to see this, just simple awareness. At its core, the economy is about products and consumers. For any product to achieve the highest success, it needs consumers.

How do you know an Instagram account is successful? It has the highest number of followers (consumers).

How do you know a music festival is a massive success? It is attended by the largest number of people (consumers).

How do you know a streaming platform is the biggest? It is used by the most subscribers (consumers).

What makes an app “the best”? Having the biggest user base (consumers).

How do you know the best bar in town? It is where the highest number of people gather to consume drinks.

The success of every product requires the highest number of consumers who pay to use it. Invariably, the modern economy demands that products be used by millions or billions of people. Now ask yourself: what is the absolute best possible outcome for a product owner in this economy?

It is for those billions of consumers to be addicted to their product. That is why the whole financial structure needs most people to be addicted to consumption in order to survive and grow.

The economy and product owners, the people at the top of the financial hierarchy, do everything in their power so that billions of average, normal people like you and me remain addicted to consumption. That is why app algorithms, sales, and marketing are specifically designed to keep people hooked.

Do you really think the algorithms of dating apps are designed to find the right person for you? No, they are designed so that you remain on their platform, addicted to swiping. It is about keeping you a consumer of their product, not about your well-being.

Do you really think reels and the algorithms behind them are giving you something satisfying to consume so that you feel fulfilled? No. Short-form videos and their algorithms are specifically engineered so that you remain unfulfilled, driving you to consume more content. That is why when you scroll through reels, you can see how aggressive the algorithms are. You watch something, the algorithm senses you are interested in that type of content, and it immediately starts flooding your feed with more of it. It would not surprise me if these companies have entire research wings specifically studying how to design algorithms that keep people hooked to their small screens and continuously scrolling.

That is why almost all kinds of commercial consumption are designed to give you a quick, drug-like pleasure while leaving you fundamentally unfulfilled, so that you keep coming back for more. Without this addiction, you are no longer part of a herd, a follower, or a passive viewer. You become someone who can actively and consciously choose to stop consuming whenever you want. And that conscious choice is precisely what the system cannot afford. That is the exact reason why everything around you, from algorithms to marketing, is engineered to make you an addict.

And once you are an addict – you are powerless. Let me show you how powerless most TV show and content consumers are today. Look at what streaming platforms are doing today. Many of them are constantly pushing extremely low-quality TV shows and movies. Why can they get away with this? Because most people have become so addicted to content consumption that they will watch almost anything – even if it is complete garbage with no real depth, value, or quality. Anyone who is not an addict would never watch garbage if they had any conscious control over their consumption habits. But because most of us have lost that conscious control, companies can keep pushing bad-quality content, and people will still consume it anyway. When an audience is addicted, you no longer need to give them quality; you just need to keep feeding them content. This is how these platforms quietly exploit and abuse addicted consumers. They know people are not watching because the content is good; they are watching simply because they cannot stop consuming.

Education: Consumption training in childhood

The training for consumption and the addiction to it starts in childhood, right inside our schools.

The other day, I went to a festival where a salsa dance workshop was taking place, so a few friends and I decided to join. I had never done salsa before. Naturally, as we started learning a few basic steps and trying them out, I looked around. Most people there had never practised salsa either, and almost everyone was constantly looking at each other. It felt as if we all shared the same quiet, collective thought: “Am I doing this right? Is this good?” As my awareness deepened into my own mind, I noticed a subtle sense of guilt arising within me just for not being able to follow the steps properly. Then I realised where this guilt comes from. Asking if we are “doing it right” or waiting for approval is the exact training we received in school for twelve or fifteen years. In the classroom, we are taught to sit passively, look at the teacher, consume knowledge, and measure our worth by how accurately we repeat what we were given.

The first mistake we make as a society is that we assume children are illiterate creatures who need to go through intense mental training just to become something useful. We disrespect children right from the start by assuming that they know nothing. That is why, if you look into a school curriculum, at least when I was a child, 80% to 90% of it is entirely about learning, which is just consuming knowledge, and only 10% to 20% is left for extra activities.

Is school ever a place where, for even half of the time, we leave children by themselves to simply play around? Do we truly create a safe space for them to express themselves creatively through playing, painting, or dancing? We actually don’t. Now, many people would argue, “But we do have classes for painting, playing, and dancing in schools!” But if you look deep enough, you will realise that even in those classes, we are still trying to teach them how to dance, how to play, and how to paint. We are still telling them what is right and what is wrong. We don’t simply leave them alone and allow them to express themselves in their own messy, chaotic, and imperfect way. Almost everything, even our so-called creative classes, is structured around teaching them, guiding them, and forcing them to consume rules, rather than giving them genuine space to simply express what is inside them in their own natural, imperfect ways.

With this unnatural education system, we teach children a dangerous lie: that you are only allowed to express yourself if you are extremely good at something. Only if you are perfect are you worthy of expressing yourself. Otherwise, you must keep quiet, sit down, keep learning, and keep consuming. This belief deeply wounds people as they grow into adulthood. They live their entire adult lives trapped in constant self-doubt, never truly expressing themselves, always wondering if they are good enough, proper enough, perfect enough, or knowledgeable enough to put their ideas into the world. It forces every child to carry this heavy question inside: “Am I even allowed to express myself if I am not perfect?”

This is the core reason why most adults default to consumption. Rather than picking up an instrument and playing it in their own messy way, they just listen to music. Rather than going outside and playing football in their own imperfect way, they watch professional football on TV. Rather than dancing freely, they watch perfectly choreographed dances on a screen.

We have been conditioned to believe that if our expression isn’t flawless, we should step back and remain passive consumers forever. This happens because our education system acts in service of society and the economy, rather than children, individuals, and their own life energy. The reason we are forced to think that we shouldn’t express ourselves unless our output is flawless is simple: flawless things sell. Flawlessness brings money. It creates an economy. Nobody is going to pay to watch a normal person dancing imperfectly or stumbling here and there, so that raw human expression creates no passive consumers and no economic market. But if you dance flawlessly, it suddenly becomes something that can be monetised: a reel, a performance, or a video for others to passively consume, thus feeding right back into the economic engine.

Above all, by going through this unnatural education system, we come out of it as fully conditioned addicts to consumption, making us the absolute perfect slaves and raw consumer material for the economy and financial system. We enter school as spontaneous, expressive children, and we leave it as fearful adults filled with deep-seated self-doubt and guilt whenever we even think about expressing ourselves in messy, imperfect ways. The system strips away our natural impulse to create, replaces it with an endless need to consume, and leaves us so afraid of making mistakes that we voluntarily hand over our lives to screens, products, and passive entertainment.

Schooling education should be a place that serves life, a place that honours your body and your natural energy, rather than serving the economy. It should teach us living health and harmony, not merely how to become successful in a broken society and financial structure. It should teach us not only how to learn, but how to live and experience life in our own messy, imperfect ways.

This is why I invite you to turn toward this inner work within your own individual body and mind. You do not need to go out into the world and fight against the economy or societal structures to free yourself from this addiction. If you can simply let go of these fundamental mindsets and beliefs that were instilled in you, you will naturally become free of the addiction. You will liberate your own life energy that has been stuck in passive consumption. That is why I invite you to do this inner work within yourself. As you do, you will slowly see a quiet revolution unfold in your own life, changing even how you relate to the outside world. If enough people do this real, internal work, the unhealthy economic and financial structures built on our addiction will naturally restructure.

<div
